Commercialism vs. Traditionalism in Chito Ryu Karate Do

Editorial from Soke John B. Burkhardt 10th Degree Red Belt - MUGOI GIJUTSU KARATE DO

One of the reasons why we do not recognize a connection to the NEW Chito Ryu style of martial arts of today as being even closely associated with ours, is because we have always made claim that it was developed solely for profit and being a commercial business. The style is much softer than was taught by Henry Slomanski, it was watered down by T. Chitose to open up schools in the United States.  I’m sure their practitioners feel their training is hard, but I assure you it is not even a splinter of the traditional style’s teachings. As history continues to show, according to the below photo, one can buy any black belt of any rank they wish. We would like to make it clear not all Chito Ryu Instructor’s would engage in this type of practice either.  Someone has lost the meaning of customs, decorum and traditions, while others were willing to earn the skill they teach. Again, this is not even close to MUGOI GIJUTSU’S teachings.  Why a person would want to surreptitiously buy one of these fraudulent certificates to hang on a wall is beyond me. It is something that few earn. It can only be achieved through hard work and dedication and can only be cheapened in this fashion. It appears that quite a few people, per the sales of the merchant, would like to buy misrepresentations of  a martial art achievement. This seller is not asking about training history or proof of qualification. It is not clear who is even signing these certificates, if he is a legitimate instructor and he is signing it. Are the instructors made up? You learn what you’re taught by the Master, did he buy a certificate too? Why wouldn’t a qualified instructor in the new Chito Ryu have issues with this?  A signature/hanko stamp means something in the martial arts. It is a representation from a Senior Instructor that a person has indeed met the qualifications of the given rank as all those who have gone before them. Is this what the new Chito Ryu has become today, the pride of the art, the training is all being lost?

WE, THE  MUGOI GIJUTSU, ARE IN NO WAY ASSOCIATED IN ANY MANNER WITH THE NEW STYLE OF CHITO-RYU.  IN FACT WE HAVE GOOD FRIENDS IN THE NEW STYLE CHITO RYU, EVEN THOUGH IT IS STILL AN UNRECOGNIZABLE TEACHING, A MUCH SOFTER STYLE FROM THAT OF OURS.  YET, THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE, AND GOOD MARTIAL ARTIST WHO HAVE HONOR.  WE REMAIN GOOD FRIENDS WITH THEM TODAY.  THEY ARE THE ONES WHO WORKED HARD AT THEIR TRAINING. THE ONES WHO WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. THEY HAVE THEIR REASONS FOR THEIR TEACHINGS AND THEIR THOUGHTS, IT IS USUALLY PASSED DOWN FROM AN INSTRUCTOR THEY HAD. WE HAVE OURS, WE HAVE DOCUMENTATION AND LINEAGE.  MUGOI GIJUTSU IS A MUCH HARDER, BRUTAL STYLE WITH NO COMPETITIONS ENTERED NOR FEES CHARGED, AND NO TROPHIES AWARDED. JUST HARD WORK, SWEAT AND PAIN. THIS IS HOW WE AWARD THE BELT A STUDENT EARNS!

I am the last surviving Master Instructor under Slomanski; students earned their belts and certificates. This is done through years of full contact training and being able to withstand the pain and injuries; along with the ability to learn the katas. It is becoming more clear now how there are so many high ranking belts in this system; buy a certificate on e-Bay put it on a wall and open up a dojo. The average consumer does not check on credentials and history on the instructor. This person can now wear a pretty Gi, a black belt with strips and one is all set to train students in the martial arts. BOLONEY!!!  The art of martial arts is lost when those who train would issue a certificate in this fashion. The ones who did not train and would buy this are unscrupulous and denigrate everyone who has ever taken a true lesson from an authentic instructor. We understand that this behavior has become what is the martial arts of today. We wish to thank another martial artist who recently brought this to our attention and who also understands the difference between the new style Chito Ryu and the traditional style. The two are not comparable.

As seen on Penn and Teller’s Bullshit show. They totally made the commercial art of karate out to be just that… Bullshit, and portrayed high ranking belts who cannot perform or make incredulous claims.  In all of my years teaching and the hundreds and hundreds of students, only eight (8) were able to obtain a black belt rank. Out of the eight, only one was promoted to the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt. I can assure you he did not buy his rank. He has been involved in martial arts for most of his life. He was trained under me under strict rules, decorum, and customs. I was trained by Henry Slomanski and Melvin Sauer. It is about the martial arts; not money. We do not sell or charge students who train. We carefully select who trains and out of the selection process some of those are not able to handle it and quit.

I will post the photos below and let you, the reader, decide what martial arts is about and what it should stand for. No wonder some styles have 10-year-old 4th degree black belts and higher. It is for show, a sport, and for money. It is no longer for the martial art which in its inception was to destroy and kill the opponent in a fast deadly manner. Mugoi Gijutsu has been and will always be taught in this manner for the traditional reasons and will strictly adhere to decorum and customs. I know without equivocation that any student trained under me or one of my instructors would never behave in this manner. The selection process has rigor with meaning and our history has proved that this traditional style has maintained and produced quality over quantity without a charge to the student.

You too can be a Black Belt in the New Style Chito Ryu for $41.99 - but not in our "Traditional Style"
